FIBROMYALGIA

Each year, approximately 4 million women ages 18 and older in the USA experience the debilitating effects of Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)*. Regardless of age or general health, these conditions can be a painful and exhausting burden, interrupting sleep and activities that are part of a healthy life. Cannabis can help reduce the pain and fatigue central to Fibromyalgia and CFS.

Let's break down four important aspects of cannabis and fibromyalgia/CFS. Cannabis, both CBD and THC, are powerful analgesics and mood regulators. We'll also cover CBG and CBN, lesser-known cannabinoids showing strong promise in helping people who suffer from these conditions.

THC and CBD

The Power Pain Fighters Many patients find that CBD relaxes them while THC boosts appetite and reduces pain. For immediate support, many turn temporarily to vape pens or flower. Both act quickly to alleviate some of the harsher effects of fibromyalgia and CFS.

The Promise of CBG and CBD

Because both CBD and CBG are powerful anti-inflammatories, they work together to assist in reducing inflammation and pain. CBD also acts as an analgesic. If you add a low level of THC (2-5 mg), you can experience pain relief without significant side effects.

CBN

The Sleep Aid CBN, known for its sedative properties, can be particularly beneficial for fibromyalgia and CFS patients struggling with sleep issues. It may help improve sleep quality and duration, which is crucial for managing these conditions.

Older Women

Warnings and Cautions Of the 4 million people in the USA that suffer from fibromyalgia, approximately 15% are over the age of 60. With many changes occurring in the body at this stage of life, the effects of cannabis may not be welcome. Older clients should start low and slow, remain well-hydrated and nourished to maximize the best effects.

How Cannabis Can Help
Cannabis interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), which plays a role in various physiological processes, including pain sensation, mood, and sleep. For fibromyalgia and CFS patients, this interaction can potentially help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

The main cannabinoids in cannabis affect the body in different ways:

  • THC binds directly to cannabinoid receptors and can help with pain, mood, and appetite stimulation.

  • CBD doesn't bind directly to these receptors but may help reduce inflammation and anxiety and the resultant erosive effects on the body.

  • CBG acts similarly to CBD but is a powerful anti-inflammatory which helps keep pain in check by reducing inflammation.

  • CBN may help improve sleep quality, which is often disrupted in fibromyalgia and CFS patients.

  • Cannabis shows a lot of anecdotal evidence of supporting sufferers of fibromyalgia and CFS. Dosing combinations that leverage CBG and CBN, and using THC to reduce pain and improve mood, work best.
